Behind the Music: Meet the Teachers of Newpark

Irvin Karkauskas

Irvin Karkauskas began his classical studies at the age of 5, while also studying jazz harmony in parallel. He attended TU Dublin, where he studied under Padhraic O’Cuinnegain. He has participated in many classical piano competitions, earning first place in the Midlands Feis Ceoil in 2015 and the Naval Choral Festival in 2016, along with numerous highly commended certificates over the years.

Irvin started his professional jazz career by performing weekly and participating in charity events across Dublin. More recently, he was part of the Siena Jazz Festival in July 2024. He is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music at DCU.

For the past 5 years, he has taught piano both privately and in schools. His teaching style is fun and explorational, strongly emphasising the enjoyment for students as they journey through learning piano and piano theory.

Join us for our next student concert at Newpark Academy of Music this Saturday, the 23rd of November at 2:30pm! It's set to be a wonderful day of music by our hard working students.

This is our last student concert of the term before our big annual Winter Wonderland Concert on the 14th of December, so you won't want to miss it!

🎹 Practice Tip of the Week: Use a Timer! 🎹

We all know how frustrating it can be to get stuck on a difficult section during practice. But here’s a simple trick to help you stay focused and make real progress: set a timer! ⏱️

Pick a challenging section of your music and set a timer for 10 minutes. During that time, focus all your attention on improving that section—whether it’s nailing the rhythm, getting the notes just right, or working on your dynamics.

When the timer goes off, move on to another part of your practice. This keeps your mind sharp, prevents frustration, and helps you stay productive throughout your session. You’ll be amazed at how much you can achieve with just a little focused effort! 🎵

Gwendoline Douglas

Gwendoline is a violinist and passionate music educator. Alongside teaching violin, she leads the Newpark Nippers classes, where creativity and imagination are central to her work. Gwendoline is also committed to integrating music into healthcare settings and is currently pursuing an MA in Music Therapy at the University of Limerick. In her spare time, she enjoys unwinding with arts and crafts - always with a cup of tea nearby!

🎶 Practice Tip of The Week: Practice Away from the Instrument 🎶

Did you know that you can practice music even when you're not sitting at your instrument? Here are a few easy ways to build a stronger connection to your piece, no matter where you are!

🎵 Sing Your Part: Sing or hum through the melody (or any tricky section!) to really get it into your ear. This helps you remember how the music sounds and feels, even when you’re not playing.

🎵 Clap Out the Rhythms: Rhythm is the foundation of every piece! Clap through the rhythms to get comfortable with the timing and flow of the music. This is great for working through any challenging sections.

🎵 Imagine Playing the Piece: Close your eyes and picture yourself playing through each part. Imagine how it sounds and how you feel as you play. Visualizing like this can help make the music feel more familiar and even help with nerves.

Give these "away from the instrument" practices a try, and see how they deepen your understanding of the music!

Kevin Brady

Kevin Brady is an accomplished Irish drummer, composer, and educator known for his work in jazz and contemporary music. With over two decades of professional experience, Kevin has performed internationally alongside acclaimed musicians, including Bill Carrothers, Norma Winstone, and Seamus Blake, and has been featured at major jazz festivals in Europe and the U.S.

Kevin's unique approach to rhythm and sound has led to multiple award-winning projects and celebrated recordings. At Newpark Academy of Music, Kevin shares his expertise with students, inspiring them to deepen their understanding of music and develop their own voices as musicians.

Aimee Banks, a distinguished soprano from Galway, Ireland, has rapidly established herself in the world of classical music. Graduating with first-class honors from the Royal Irish Academy of Music, she trained under Kathleen Tynan, Head of Opera and Vocal Studies, and répétiteur Dearbhla Collins.

Her impressive accolades include winning the Junior Class of the Charles Wood International Song Competition in 2023, the Irene Sandford Award and Bursary, and the Birr Lions Club Bursary at the Birr Festival of Music. She was also a finalist in the Veronica Dunne Bursary for Young Irish Singers.

Aimee has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and the National Concert Hall. She has been a featured artist at celebrated events such as Ann Murray’s Lifetime Achievement Award Gala Concert and the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival, with her performances airing on LyricFm. Her operatic roles have included young Giordano Bruno in Roger Doyle’s Heresy—for which she received acclaim from Opera World, The Irish Times, and Opera Today—as well as key roles in L'incoronazione di Poppea, La liberazione di Ruggiero, and the chorus of Macbeth at the Blackwater Valley Opera Festival. In 2024, she played the title role in Viardot’s Cendrillon, solidifying her presence as a versatile and captivating talent in the classical music scene.

Hilda Chan

Hilda Chan is the Executive Director at Newpark Academy of Music. She began her musical journey at the Cork School of Music (now MTU), completing both her degree and master’s. Hilda then furthered her studies at the Kodály Institute in Hungary, specializing in early music education and advanced choir conducting.

Her main focus is conducting, and Hilda credits her late teacher, Alan Cutts, with having a profound impact on her studies and musical journey.

In 2022, she was honored to be appointed as the Executive Director of Newpark Academy of Music. Hilda’s mission is to nurture and expand upon the incredible 45-year legacy of the organization. Excitement abounds for the future and the musical adventures that lie ahead! 🎉

Outreach Solfège Workshop at Clokeen College

I am thrilled to share the success of our recent Outreach Solfège Workshop held at Clokeen College for Transition Year (TY) and second-year students! 🎶

The workshop aimed to introduce students to the fundamentals of solfège, enhancing their musical literacy and listening skills. Through engaging activities and interactive exercises, we explored the connections between sight-singing, ear training, and overall musical understanding.

The enthusiasm and participation from the students were truly inspiring. It was wonderful to see them embrace the concepts of pitch, rhythm, and melody while developing their confidence in music. A special thank you to the staff and students at Clokeen College for their warm welcome and support in making this workshop a memorable experience.

Behind the Music: Meet the Teachers of Newpark

Chiara Trejo Infante

Chiara teaches Voice and Gateway to Music 1 and 2. She is pursuing her BMus at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. She currently conducts the Boydell Choir and has numerous years of choral and solo singing experience, her last large-scale project being the premiere of Stephen McNeff’s Spirits Unsurrenderd opera. She has undergone three singing courses at the Juilliard School in the USA, and trained with renowned US-American, Mexican, Sri Lankan, Irish, and Italian vocal teachers and coaches. Her passion and sensibility allow her to transmit her love of music to people of all ages.

Filip Baszynski is a dedicated piano teacher from Poland with a proven track record of success in national and international piano competitions. Notable achievements include 1st place in the Senior Piano Solo at the Feis Coil, 1st in a Dublin Chamber music Festival, and 2nd at an International Festival in Lithuania.

Having studied under esteemed musicians such as Anthony Byrne and Elzbieta Lickiewicz, Filip integrates their extensive knowledge and experience into his teaching. His mission is to cultivate a friendly and supportive environment, ensuring that every student feels valued and inspired.

Meet the Artist - Dave Redmond, The Tommy Halferty Trio

Dave Redmond is a renowned double bassist whose rich, versatile sound has made him a prominent figure in the Irish and international jazz scenes. He’s best known for his work with the Kevin Brady Trio, Tommy Halferty Trio, Phil Ware Trio, and world music group Yurodny, as well as collaborations with top artists like Bill Carrothers and Larry Coryell.

A graduate of Newpark Music Centre, Dave has recorded over 30 albums and regularly appears on TV and radio, including RTÉ and BBC. His debut album, Roots, received critical acclaim, including a 4-star review in the Irish Times and recognition as a top release by All About Jazz.
